Dambai

In January 2023, Chance for Children opened another branch in Dambai. Dambai, the capital of the Oti Region, is located about 340 km northeast of Accra. Dambai is a fishing community situated on the eastern side of the Oti River, a tributary of the Volta Lake, which accounts for 70% of Ghana’s total inland fishery production.

In Dambai, the needs of street-connected children are immense. Many children come from Tamale and work in the town and environs until they move further to Accra. Children are, in many cases, forced to engage in fishing-related activities, including deep sea diving, dangerous fishing at night, trading, and farming, while being subjected to various forms of abuse.

A team of trained social workers who understand the socio-cultural environment and come from this region work with the children on the streets, accompany them back to their families, and strengthen the existing structures in the villages so that the children do not run away.

Also, in Dambai, we established a close cooperation with local partners to find the best solutions for the children and families.
