Drop-in Centre

An oasis away from the struggle for survival

In July 2015 we opened our day center in Abossey Okai, close to Agbogbloshie, a slum in the heart of Accra where many children live and work. In our drop-in centre (the Centre), we aim to release children from the pressure of the street. Here, up to 45 boys and girls receive a hot meal, medical and psychological care and can take part in classes and workshops. They can also use this space to bath, wash their clothes, rest or just play carefree.

Social workers and educators are present in the Centre to provide the best possible care for the children. In this way we can support them in situ and develop short and long-term perspectives with them. Only after we have got to know a child sufficiently in the Centre we visit his/her family when this is appropriate and we seek together for the best solution for the child, and in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare: reintegrating the child into their family, taking them to one of our homes or refer them to another NGO.

Our results in 2023*

  • 373 children attended our DIC throughout the year

  • 24 children enrolled in Primary School

  • 19 children transferred to our homes in Hebron

  • 21 children reunified with their families

CFC’s work has been impacted by the measures the Ghanaian government introduced to contain COVID-19. Our street workers had to cease their activities and the drop-in center was closed between March and September 2020.

CFC instantly responded with a customized approach to this complex situation in-line with official advice and without jeopardizing children’s safety.

The 2021 results reflect these unprecedented times in scale, impact and the restriction of our activities.
